From hamstring and quadriceps problems to knee, back, toe and finger injuries, India’s growing list of sidelined players is raising fresh questions about workload, recovery and fitness management.

India’s Injury List Grows: Bumrah, Hardik, Gill Among Players Facing Fitness Concerns

Indian cricket is currently facing an increasingly crowded injury list, with several important players either undergoing rehabilitation or being monitored by the medical team. The timing is significant. India is preparing for the Sri Lanka Test series from August 15, while the team is also looking ahead to the 2027 ODI World Cup. The growing number of injuries has now pushed player fitness and rehabilitation firmly into the spotlight.

Bumrah, Hardik headline the concerns

Jasprit Bumrah remains the biggest concern for India. The pace spearhead has been ruled out of the Sri Lanka Tests after continuing to deal with knee swelling following an impact injury. He is recovering at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

Hardik Pandya, meanwhile, is recovering from a quadriceps injury and remains at the Centre of Excellence. His absence is particularly important because India relies on him as a genuine batting and bowling all-rounder.

Hamstrings are becoming a recurring problem

Several players are dealing with hamstring issues.

Harshit Rana suffered a Grade 1 right-hamstring injury, while Varun Chakravarthy sustained a Grade 2 left-hamstring injury. Both injuries occurred during India’s recent white-ball assignments and required rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence.

Washington Sundar is also recovering from a hamstring injury, while Prince Yadav is nursing another hamstring problem.

Nitish Kumar Reddy, another important all-round option, has been sidelined with a quadriceps injury, further reducing India’s depth in the role.

Back and toe injuries add to the list

Akash Deep has been dealing with a lower-back stress injury, keeping the fast bowler away from competitive cricket for an extended period.

Sai Sudharsan has suffered a left big-toe injury and has now been ruled out of the Sri Lanka Tests. The timing is particularly frustrating after his impressive performances for India A.

Then came another concern for India’s captain.

Shubman Gill suffered an impact injury to his right ring finger during training in Colombo. He missed the opening day of India’s warm-up match, with the BCCI medical team monitoring his condition. He has not yet been ruled out of the first Test.

The bigger concern: why so many injuries?

There is no evidence that all these injuries have one common cause. Cricket’s physical demands, previous injuries, workload, travel and recovery can all play a role. But the sheer number of players currently undergoing rehabilitation has raised questions about workload management and the BCCI’s injury-management system.

The Centre of Excellence has come under increased scrutiny, with BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia set to meet Head of Cricket VVS Laxman to review the rehabilitation programme amid the growing injury list. Reports have also highlighted the heavy workload on the Sports Science team.

The immediate challenge is clear: get India’s players fit without rushing them back.

India’s current injury watch

Jasprit Bumrah: Knee swelling — ruled out of Sri Lanka Tests.

Hardik Pandya: Quadriceps injury — rehabilitation ongoing.

Harshit Rana: Grade 1 right-hamstring injury.

Nitish Kumar Reddy: Quadriceps injury.

Washington Sundar: Hamstring injury.

Varun Chakravarthy: Grade 2 left-hamstring injury.

Prince Yadav: Hamstring injury.

Akash Deep: Lower-back stress injury.

Sai Sudharsan: Left big-toe injury — ruled out of Sri Lanka Tests.

Shubman Gill: Right ring-finger impact injury — under monitoring.

India certainly has the depth to replace individual players. But with the 2027 World Cup on the horizon, the bigger requirement is continuity.

Because replacements can fill a spot. They cannot replace a settled, injury-free team.
