The Indian women’s hockey team faces its biggest test of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 so far when it takes on Australia in a decisive Pool E encounter on Sunday at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen.
For India, the equation is simple but unforgiving: win against Australia and keep the semifinal dream alive. However, the result of the earlier Netherlands-China match will also play a crucial role in determining who advances to the last four.
India’s road to the semifinals
India entered the second phase with one point after a 2-2 draw against China in the opening round. Navneet and Deepika were India’s scorers in that match.
The team then secured a crucial 0-0 draw against England, a result that helped India finish second in its opening pool and advance to the next stage. India’s defence stood out in that game, successfully keeping England from converting any of their 12 penalty corners.
But the challenge intensified against defending champions Netherlands.
Netherlands expose India’s margin for error
India suffered a 0-2 defeat to the Netherlands in their opening second-stage match on Friday. Yibbi Jansen struck from a penalty corner in the second minute before Frederique Matla doubled the lead in the 38th minute, also from a set piece.
Despite the defeat, India’s defensive effort offered encouragement. Goalkeeper Savita made several important saves, while Bichu Devi and the Indian backline also resisted sustained Dutch pressure. The Netherlands, however, controlled enough of the contest to secure their place in the semifinals.
The Pool E equation
The standings have made Sunday’s clash a virtual quarter-final for India and Australia.
Netherlands – 6 points
China – 2 points
India – 1 point
Australia – 1 point
India must beat Australia to move to four points. A Netherlands victory or draw against China would then strengthen India’s qualification chances, while a Chinese victory could make the calculation dependent on goal difference.
India and Australia therefore enter the contest knowing that there is virtually no room for error.
Australia bring their own threat
Australia have also endured a difficult second phase. The Hockeyroos lost 2-4 to the Netherlands in the opening round, despite putting the world No. 1 side under considerable pressure and earning eight penalty corners in the first quarter.
They later drew 1-1 with China, leaving them level with India on one point.
For India, the task will be to turn their defensive resilience into attacking efficiency. The team has shown it can withstand pressure, but against Australia, creating and converting chances will be equally important.
A night for composure
India’s campaign has already shown two contrasting sides: the ability to fight through difficult moments and the difficulty of breaking down the world’s strongest defences. Now, with a semifinal place at stake, the margin for mistakes has become even smaller.
The Indian women know exactly what is required. Beat Australia, then wait for the Netherlands-China result. The road to the semifinals is still open, but India must first create its own opportunity.
