LAUSANNE, Switzerland: Kayla White delivered a breakthrough performance at the 2026 Athletissima Lausanne Diamond League, winning a dramatic women’s 200m final in 22.18 seconds. But the American’s first Diamond League triumph was overshadowed by a worrying injury to Jamaican star Shericka Jackson, who was forced to pull out of the race during the final stages.
White, who entered the meeting with a 2026 best of 21.92 seconds, produced a composed finish to secure her first victory in the Diamond League series. The result came against a field that included Jackson, four-time European champion Amy Hunt and Nigerian sprint star Favour Ofili.
Jackson’s race ends abruptly
Jackson made a strong start and appeared to be in contention as the runners came off the bend. However, as she entered the final straight, the Jamaican suddenly slowed and pulled up.
She appeared to be in significant discomfort and subsequently went down on the track before receiving assistance from medical staff. Reports described the problem as an apparent thigh/hamstring injury, although a definitive diagnosis was not immediately available.
The setback is particularly concerning given Jackson’s status as the second-fastest woman in history over 200m, with her personal best of 21.41 seconds. She is also a two-time world champion in the event, having won the title in 2022 and 2023.
White holds off Hunt and Ofili
With Jackson out of contention, White maintained her composure and crossed the line first in 22.18s.
Britain’s Amy Hunt, returning to competition after a remarkable European Championships campaign, took second in 22.32s. Hunt had won four gold medals in Birmingham the previous week, including the individual 100m and 200m titles.
Nigeria’s Favour Ofili also clocked 22.32s, but Hunt was awarded second after a photo finish separated the pair by only 0.003 seconds.

A breakthrough night for White
White’s victory was more than simply another Diamond League result. It marked the first Diamond League win of her career, giving the American an important confidence boost as the season approaches its decisive stages.
The race also underlined the depth of the women’s 200m field, with three athletes finishing within 0.14 seconds of the winner.
For Jackson, however, the night ended on a very different note. The Jamaican had returned to competition cautiously this season and had been rebuilding her form. Her injury in Lausanne now becomes a major concern with the most important meetings of the season approaching.
The bigger picture
The Lausanne meeting was one of the final opportunities for athletes to strengthen their position ahead of the Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels on September 4–5. White leaves Switzerland with a major victory, while Jackson’s fitness will now be closely monitored.
For one athlete, Lausanne became the scene of a career milestone. For another, it ended with an anxious wait for answers.
