BRATISLAVA, Slovakia: Canada’s Kaura Coles produced another standout performance on the international wrestling stage, capturing the women’s 53kg gold medal at the 2026 U20 World Wrestling Championships. Japan also enjoyed a highly successful session, with Yuu Katsume and Chisato Yoshida claiming gold at 50kg and 72kg respectively.
The 2026 U20 World Championships are being held in Bratislava from August 16 to 23, bringing together around 700 wrestlers across freestyle, Greco-Roman and women’s wrestling.
Coles continues her rise
Coles entered the 53kg competition with a strong pedigree, having already established herself as a world-level age-group wrestler. The Canadian successfully negotiated a challenging bracket before reaching the gold-medal bout.
In the final, Coles defeated Alexa Alvarez of Venezuela 10-2, securing the U20 world title in convincing fashion.
The victory adds another significant chapter to Coles’ rapidly developing career. She had previously made headlines as the first Canadian women’s wrestler to win a U17 World Championship gold, also at 53kg.
Her 2026 success also came against a highly competitive 53kg field that included China’s Yuxuan Li, India’s Muskan and Japan’s Mei Koiwa.
Katsume dominates at 50kg
Japan’s Yuu Katsume added another gold medal to the country’s tally at 50kg.
Katsume defeated Margarita Iarygina of Russia 10-0 in the final, completing a commanding run through the competition. Her performance underlined why she was considered one of Japan’s leading young talents before the championships. UWW had already identified Katsume as a major contender, noting her previous 2024 U17 World Championship title.
Yoshida holds her nerve in 72kg final
Japan’s second gold came from Chisato Yoshida at 72kg, where she defeated India’s Tanu Sharma 5-3.
The final proved more closely contested than Katsume’s bout, with Yoshida having to fight through pressure to secure the championship. The result capped a strong tournament for the Japanese wrestler, who had also been listed among the leading contenders in UWW’s pre-championship assessment.
Yoshida’s route to the final included a semifinal against Ukraine’s Khrystyna Demchuk, while Sharma reached the title bout after progressing through the opposite side of the bracket.
Three champions, three different stories
The three finals highlighted different strengths.
Kaura Coles — Canada: 53kg gold, defeating Alexa Alvarez 10-2.
Yuu Katsume — Japan: 50kg gold, defeating Margarita Iarygina 10-0.
Chisato Yoshida — Japan: 72kg gold, defeating Tanu Sharma 5-3.
For Canada, Coles’ victory represents another important step in the country’s development in women’s wrestling. For Japan, Katsume and Yoshida’s victories underline the depth of its next generation and provide a significant boost in the race for the women’s team honours.
With the U20 World Championships continuing in Bratislava, the performances of Coles, Katsume and Yoshida have already provided some of the tournament’s strongest individual stories.
