Tottenham Hotspur have strongly condemned “vile, dehumanising racism” directed at Kevin Danso following their 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion.
Club takes strong stance
The abuse came after Danso’s late error allowed Georginio Rutter to score an equaliser in stoppage time, a result that keeps Spurs in the relegation zone.
Tottenham confirmed the “significant and abhorrent” racist messages have been reported to police and relevant authorities, vowing to take the strongest possible action against those responsible.
Player responds to abuse
Danso addressed the issue on social media, stating that the abuse “doesn’t define” him and will not distract him from his focus. The defender emphasised that discrimination has no place in football or society.
Premier League campaign context
The incident occurred during the Premier League’s “No Room For Racism” campaign, which aims to tackle discrimination and promote inclusivity in the sport.
League officials reiterated that individuals found guilty of racist abuse could face bans and legal consequences.
Ongoing issue in football
This is the latest in a series of incidents this season, with multiple players across clubs being targeted. Authorities, including the UK Football Policing Unit, continue to investigate cases as football bodies push for stricter enforcement and accountability.
The episode highlights the ongoing challenge of combating online abuse, even as campaigns and regulations attempt to address the issue.
