Andre Russell Retires from IPL, Becomes KKR’s “Power Coach” for 2026

Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Andre Russell has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League, bringing an end to a legendary 12-season career. The 37-year-old West Indies star, recently released by KKR, revealed on Instagram that he will not be joining another franchise. Instead, he will remain with the team in a new capacity as the franchise’s “Power Coach” for the 2026 season.

“Hanging up my IPL boots… but not the swagger,” Russell wrote. “What a ride it’s been in the IPL — 12 seasons of memories, and a whole lot of love from the KKR family. I’ll still be smashing sixes and taking wickets in every other league around the world. And the best part? I’m not leaving home… you’ll see me in a new role, in KKR’s Support Staff, as the POWER COACH of 2026. New chapter. Same energy. Forever a Knight.”

A Career of Big-Hitting and Wickets
Russell made his IPL debut in 2012 for Delhi Daredevils before joining KKR in 2014, where he played 133 of his 140 IPL games. Known for his explosive lower-order hitting, he scored 2,651 runs at a strike rate of 174.18 and took 123 wickets with best bowling figures of 5/15. He helped KKR lift two IPL titles (2014 and 2024) and was named IPL MVP twice (2015 and 2019). With 223 sixes, Russell ranks seventh on the all-time IPL six-hitters list, behind the likes of Chris Gayle, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, AB de Villiers, and David Warner.

Recent Challenges and Release from KKR
The past few seasons saw a dip in Russell’s performance. In IPL 2025, he scored just 167 runs and took eight wickets at an economy of 11.94, prompting concerns about form and fitness. KKR’s decision to release him ahead of the 2026 auction freed up INR 12 crore for new acquisitions.

Joining KKR’s Coaching Setup
Russell’s retirement from IPL play doesn’t mean stepping away from cricket. He will take on the role of Power Coach, focusing on hitting, finishing, and boosting team energy. He joins a revamped KKR support staff that includes Abhishek Nayar as Head Coach, Shane Watson as Assistant Coach, Tim Southee as Bowling Coach, and West Indies great Dwayne “DJ” Bravo as Mentor.

While his IPL journey has ended, Russell plans to continue competing in other franchise leagues worldwide, ensuring that his presence on the field will still be felt globally. At KKR, however, his legacy and experience will now help shape the next generation of Knights.
