Kochi, June 23, 2025 – Dr. Alwin Antony, Associate Professor of Community Medicine at Government Medical College (GMC), Idukki, has achieved a remarkable sporting milestone by winning two gold medals in the 100 m and 200 m sprints at the prestigious World Medical Games held recently in Lloret de Mar, Spain. He is the sole representative from Kerala—and one of the few Indian doctors—to win gold at the biennial “Olympics for healthcare professionals.”
From Classroom to Track: A Journey of Passion and Perseverance
A native of Alappad in Thrissur, Dr. Alwin’s love for sprinting dates back to his school days. As an MBBS student at Ernakulam Government Medical College, he competed in athletics at both the college and university levels. However, the rigorous demands of medical studies forced him to temporarily set aside his athletic pursuits.
Later, motivated by support from family, colleagues at Ernakulam and Idukki GMCs, and officials at the Cochin chapter of the Indian Medical Association, he returned to training with renewed vigor. Under the mentorship of Asian Games gold medallist and Arjuna awardee Joseph Abraham, Dr. Alwin sharpened his sprinting skills and started collecting medals at national events.
Building a Winning Resume
Prior to his stellar performance in Spain, Dr. Alwin had a strong national track record:
Silver medals in both 100 m and 200 m at the Indian Medical Association (IMA) National Sports Meets in Vijayawada and Aurangabad
Gold at the MAC Open National Masters Athletics Championships earlier this year
These victories not only bolstered his confidence but also laid the groundwork for his international success.
A Triumph Beyond Medals
Competing against finalists from over 50 countries, including France, Mexico, and Algeria, Dr. Alwin delivered peak performances to stand atop the podium in his events. He described the experience as both emotional and inspiring, emphasizing that the greatest prize was the enduring friendships forged among fellow healthcare professionals worldwide.
Dr. Alwin reflected:
> “At the event, healthcare professionals of various age groups from over 50 countries are bound together by a passion for sports rather than nationality. Winning gold for India in the 100 m and 200 m sprint events … was an emotional moment.”
Celebrating a Dual Career
The IMA Cochin leadership has lauded Dr. Alwin for his incredible achievement, describing him as a “remarkable athlete” and an exceptional doctor. They expressed pride in seeing him bring international recognition to both Kerala and India.
Dr. Alwin’s journey highlights the powerful impact of pursuing one’s passion—even while maintaining a demanding professional career. His story is a testament to disciplined training, community support, and the pursuit of excellence.
