Mark Williams has made a bold promise in his quest for snooker history, joking that he would “run down the M4 naked” if he wins a fourth World Championship title.
The three-time champion is aiming to add to his previous triumphs and break the record for the oldest winner, currently shared by Ronnie O’Sullivan.
Fourth title ambition
Williams last lifted the title in 2018 when he defeated John Higgins in a thrilling final. True to his word back then, he celebrated by attending his press conference wearing only a towel.
Now 51, the Welshman remains hungry for success but admits time is not on his side. He said he would “do anything” to win again, even as the challenge becomes tougher with age.
Health concerns remain
The veteran is dealing with eyesight issues and is considering lens replacement surgery. However, he remains cautious after hearing about complications faced by Anthony Hamilton.
Williams has also struggled with the “yips” this season, affecting his cue action and consistency. Despite that, he plans to increase practice ahead of the tournament to regain rhythm.
Still competing at highest level
Despite physical challenges, Williams continues to perform at an elite level. In 2025, he became the oldest ranking event winner by surpassing Ray Reardon’s long-standing record.
He remains among the world’s top-ranked players and is set to begin his latest campaign at the World Snooker Championship against debutant Antoni Kowalski.
Crucible love-hate bond
Williams has often described a mixed relationship with the Crucible Theatre but insists the World Championship belongs there.
He welcomed the decision to keep the tournament at the iconic venue until 2045, calling it the true home of snooker with a unique atmosphere.
No plans to retire
Retirement is not on Williams’ mind. He has previously set himself goals to remain competitive into his mid-50s and continues to enjoy life on tour.
For now, the focus is simple — keep fighting, stay competitive, and chase one more historic moment.
