Chinese star Wu Yize captured his maiden World Snooker Championship title after defeating Shaun Murphy 18-17 in a thrilling Crucible final.
The dramatic contest went all the way to a deciding frame before Wu produced a superb break of 85 to seal victory and become the second-youngest world champion in Crucible history.
The final featured multiple momentum swings, high-quality break-building and several dramatic comebacks, quickly earning recognition as one of the greatest Crucible finals in recent years.
Ronnie O’Sullivan’s Campaign Ends Early
Seven-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan once again attracted major attention during the tournament as he pursued a record-breaking eighth world title.
However, O’Sullivan’s run ended in the last 16 after a dramatic defeat to fellow Class of ’92 rival John Higgins in a deciding-frame encounter.
Despite his exit, O’Sullivan remained one of the biggest attractions at the Crucible, with discussions continuing around his future schedule and long-term involvement in the sport.
Zhao Xintong Falls Short of Repeat Glory
Defending champion Zhao Xintong entered the tournament among the favourites after an outstanding season that included victories in the World Grand Prix, Players Championship and Tour Championship.
However, Zhao’s hopes of defending the title ended in the quarter-finals after losing to Shaun Murphy, extending the infamous “Crucible Curse” that has prevented first-time champions from successfully retaining the title.
Judd Trump and Other Stars Impress
World No. 1 Judd Trump remained one of the standout performers throughout the season and continued showcasing elite scoring consistency across major ranking events.
Meanwhile, Mark Allen and Wu Yize produced one of the most talked-about moments of the championship during a record-breaking 100-minute frame in the semifinals.
The marathon frame sparked debate around shot clocks, tactical safety play and the mental endurance required at the highest level of snooker.
Crucible Chaos and Global Growth
This year’s tournament also saw unusual interruptions, including a protest incident during the final and table-related controversies during the World Seniors Championship held at the Crucible Theatre.
At the same time, the championship highlighted snooker’s expanding global reach, particularly China’s growing dominance in the sport. Wu Yize’s triumph followed Zhao Xintong’s 2025 success, reinforcing Asia’s rising influence in professional snooker.
Sports Science and Mental Endurance in Snooker
Modern snooker increasingly relies on sports psychology, recovery management and concentration training.
Elite players often compete in multi-session matches lasting over 10 hours across two days, placing enormous demands on posture, focus and mental stamina.
Performance experts now use eye-tracking analysis, cognitive conditioning and fatigue-management techniques to help players maintain precision deep into long Crucible sessions.
