Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill has been appointed Blackburn Rovers boss until the end of the season, in a move that will see him juggle responsibilities for both club and country.
Blackburn Appointment Confirmed
Michael O’Neill will take charge at Blackburn Rovers until the end of the Championship campaign. The club confirmed interim boss Damien Johnson will oversee Saturday’s clash with Queens Park Rangers, with O’Neill watching from the stands.
Blackburn currently sit 22nd in the table, outside the relegation zone only on goal difference, following the departure of Valerien Ismael earlier this month.
O’Neill’s backroom staff at Ewood Park will include former Northern Ireland captain Steven Davis and ex-Blackburn and Manchester United defender Phil Jones.
World Cup Play-Off Challenge
Alongside his club duties, O’Neill must prepare Northern Ireland for next month’s World Cup play-off semi-final against Italy in Bergamo on 26 March. Victory would set up a final against either Wales or Bosnia-Herzegovina five days later.
The 56-year-old thanked the Irish FA for their support, describing Blackburn as a “historic Premier League-winning club” and outlining his aim to build momentum in the closing weeks of the season.
Northern Ireland are chasing a first World Cup appearance in 40 years and their first major tournament since O’Neill led them to UEFA Euro 2016 during his first spell in charge.
Echoes Of Stoke Arrangement
This is not the first time O’Neill has combined club and international roles. He previously balanced his Northern Ireland duties with managing Stoke City in 2020. However, the Covid-19 pandemic delayed the Euro 2020 play-offs and he departed before those fixtures were played.
After leaving Stoke in 2022, O’Neill returned for a second spell with Northern Ireland, signing a deal that runs through to the conclusion of the Euro 2028 campaign.
Irish FA chief executive Patrick Nelson described the move as “progressive” and insisted national team preparations would remain unaffected, adding that O’Neill’s continued involvement in elite club football would strengthen his readiness for the crucial play-off in Italy.
