Ferrari have secured the long-term future of Charles Leclerc after announcing a new contract extension for the Monaco-born driver ahead of his home Grand Prix weekend.
The 28-year-old, who joined Ferrari in 2019, has agreed fresh terms that will keep him with the Italian team for the coming seasons as both sides continue their pursuit of a Formula 1 world championship.
Childhood Dream Continues In Red
Leclerc described the extension as a special moment, highlighting his lifelong connection with Ferrari.
Having joined the Ferrari Driver Academy in 2016 before making his Formula 1 debut with Sauber in 2018, the Monegasque has spent the majority of his professional career within the Ferrari system.
The driver said Ferrari had become a second family and reaffirmed his commitment to helping return the Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships to Maranello.
Impressive Numbers Since Joining Ferrari
Since making his Ferrari debut in 2019, Leclerc has become one of the team’s most important drivers.
He has started 155 races for the Scuderia, winning eight Grands Prix and establishing himself as one of the fastest qualifiers in Formula 1.
Leclerc currently ranks second in Ferrari history for pole positions with 27, trailing only Michael Schumacher’s record of 58. He is also Ferrari’s second-most capped Formula 1 driver and is expected to surpass Schumacher’s tally of 179 starts if he remains with the team throughout his new deal.
This season, Leclerc sits third in the Drivers’ Championship and remains Ferrari’s highest-placed driver.
Strong Relationship With Team Principal
Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur welcomed the extension, praising Leclerc’s growth both as a driver and as a leader within the team.
Vasseur highlighted the Monegasque’s dedication, determination and close connection with Ferrari’s staff and supporters, describing the contract renewal as a natural step for both parties.
Monaco Specialist Eyes Home Success
The announcement comes ahead of Leclerc’s home race in Monaco, where he has consistently excelled during his Formula 1 career.
Over the past six seasons, he has qualified on pole position three times, started second twice and third once on the streets of Monte Carlo, underlining his exceptional speed around one of Formula 1’s most demanding circuits.
Why The Extension Makes Sense For Both Sides
The new deal also provides stability amid growing uncertainty in the Formula 1 driver market.
With Ferrari eager to build around Leclerc and several top teams already committed to their current line-ups, extending the partnership was viewed as the most logical outcome for both sides.
Despite winning only eight races since joining Ferrari, Leclerc remains regarded as one of the elite talents on the grid. Ferrari, meanwhile, continue to see him as the driver capable of ending the team’s long wait for a Drivers’ Championship.
World Title Remains The Ultimate Goal
While Leclerc’s dream of becoming a world champion with Ferrari remains unfulfilled, the contract extension signals his continued belief in the project.
As Formula 1 enters a new era of regulations and competition, Ferrari and Leclerc will hope their renewed partnership can finally deliver the success both have been chasing for years.
