Erin Cuthbert believes honest communication and “tough love” have been key factors in her development during her long spell at Chelsea.
The Scotland international, who has spent more than nine years at the club, says learning to be direct with coaches and team-mates has helped her grow both on and off the pitch.
Learning To Speak Up
Cuthbert admitted that early in her career, she found it difficult to approach managers or raise concerns about her role in the team.
“I was maybe scared to go to the manager’s office,” she said.
“I wanted to know what I could be doing to be playing more, but I didn’t always have the confidence to ask.”
Over time, she realised that honest conversations were essential for improvement and clarity.
“That’s something that’s really going to get you places,” she added.
Impact Of Emma Hayes’ ‘Tough Love’
Much of Cuthbert’s growth, she says, came under former Chelsea manager Emma Hayes, known for her demanding but supportive approach.
“I probably learned that under Emma Hayes because of how brutal she was, but also caring at the same time,” Cuthbert explained.
“It really was a bit of tough love.”
She believes Hayes showed that being firm does not mean lacking empathy.
“You can still care for somebody and want the best for all your team-mates and be direct in your communication,” she said.
Confidence Under Bompastor
Cuthbert has continued that approach under current manager Sonia Bompastor, stressing the importance of open dialogue when things are not going well.
“Even with Sonia Bompastor, if you’re not playing a game, you have to go and have that tough conversation,” she said.
“It makes you feel so much better afterwards.”
Rather than letting frustration build, Cuthbert now prefers to seek feedback and clarity directly.
