Aaron Ramsey has announced his retirement from professional football with immediate effect. The 35-year-old former Arsenal midfielder, who had been without a club since leaving Pumas UNAM last year, is expected to move into coaching.
Wales legend
Ramsey retires as one of the greatest players in the history of the Wales national football team. He scored 21 goals in 86 appearances and represented his country at three major tournaments.
He played a key role in Wales’ remarkable run to the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2016 and was named in UEFA’s team of the tournament. Ramsey later featured at UEFA Euro 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which was Wales’ first appearance at the competition in 64 years.
Club career
The creative midfielder began his professional career with Cardiff City before joining Arsenal in 2008. During an 11-year spell with the London club, he won three FA Cup titles and scored the winning goals in two finals.
Ramsey later played for Juventus and OGC Nice, while also having a loan spell at Rangers that helped the side reach the UEFA Europa League Final 2022.
He returned to boyhood club Cardiff for a second spell and even served briefly as interim head coach last season.
Ramsey thanks supporters
Announcing his decision on social media, Ramsey thanked the supporters of Wales and the clubs he represented during his career.
He said it had been a privilege to wear the Welsh shirt and experience unforgettable moments with the national team, while also expressing gratitude to his family, coaches and team-mates who helped him achieve his dream of playing at the highest level.
