London: Phil Foden faces an uncertain path to the FIFA World Cup 2026 after manager Thomas Tuchel warned that the midfielder is not guaranteed a place in the England national football team squad.
The Manchester City playmaker started both of England’s final preparatory matches before the squad selection but struggled to make a decisive impact. Deployed in a false nine role during the defeat to Japan national football team, Foden found it difficult to fill the void left by injured striker Harry Kane.
Tuchel acknowledged that the 25-year-old impressed during training sessions but admitted the performances had not carried over into competitive action. The England manager suggested that limited minutes at club level may have affected Foden’s rhythm and match sharpness.
Foden’s recent form has raised concerns, with the midfielder starting only a handful of matches for Manchester City in recent weeks and enduring a goal drought since December. His subdued displays have intensified competition for attacking midfield spots, as Tuchel weighs his options ahead of the tournament.
England must submit their final World Cup squad by May 30, leaving little time for Foden to strengthen his case. With the Three Lions scheduled to open their campaign against Croatia national football team, Tuchel is expected to prioritize players delivering consistent performances.
For Foden, the coming weeks could prove decisive. A return to form at club level may yet secure his place, but for now, one of England’s most creative talents finds himself battling to make the plane.
