Team GB’s men are two wins away from an unexpected Winter Olympic gold after squeezing into the semi-finals in Cortina.
The rink skipped by Bruce Mouat looked set for an early departure following defeat by Canada in their penultimate round-robin match, but results elsewhere kept their campaign alive.
A convincing win over the United States on Wednesday reignited their chances, and Italy’s subsequent loss to Switzerland confirmed Britain’s passage to the last four.
Swiss showdown awaits
The British quartet will now face unbeaten Switzerland in Thursday evening’s semi-final. Victory would send them into Saturday’s gold-medal match and guarantee at least a repeat of the silver secured at the Beijing Games four years ago.
Defeat would mean a bronze-medal play-off on Friday against the losers of the other semi-final between Canada and Norway, who finished above GB in the standings on head-to-head record.
Women still in contention
Team GB’s women must defeat Italy in their final round-robin match and rely on Switzerland overcoming the United States to have any chance of reaching the semi-finals.
After flirting with elimination earlier in the week, the men’s side now have a clear path to the podium if they can overcome the tournament’s only unbeaten team.
