BENGALURU : India stayed in contention in the Davis Cup 2026 Qualifiers Round 1 after Dhakshineswar Suresh produced a composed straight-sets win to draw the tie level 1-1 against the Netherlands, following Sumit Nagal’s earlier singles defeat.
In the opening rubber, Sumit Nagal lost to Guy de Ouden 0-6, 6-4, 3-6 in a closely fought match where he recovered strongly after a one-sided first set but could not sustain momentum in the decider. The loss handed the Dutch side an early advantage.
With pressure mounting, Dhakshineswar Suresh stepped up in the second singles, stunning world No. 88 Jesper de Jong 6-4, 7-5 in a battle of big servers. Ranked outside the top 400, Dhakshineswar showed maturity beyond his ranking, serving confidently and delivering crucial breaks at key moments to restore parity for the hosts.
“This win reinforces Dhakshineswar’s growing stature as a dependable Davis Cup player,” noted reports, highlighting his rise after previous strong performances for India. A Dutch team official even remarked that his ranking does not reflect his true ability, underlining the significance of the upset.
