Visakhapatnam— India ushered in a new chapter in their women’s cricket campaign on Sunday with left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma making her Women’s T20 International debut in the opening match of the India Women vs Sri Lanka Women T20I series at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium. Sharma’s inclusion in the playing XI highlights India’s strategic effort to broaden its spin resources ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.
India captain Harmanpreet Kaur, having won the toss, elected to bowl first on a pitch expected to favour bowlers in the early evening conditions. The move set the stage for Sharma’s debut, as she was handed her maiden cap and introduced into the bowling attack in the first T20I of the five-match series against Sri Lanka.
Sharma, 20, comes into the senior side on the back of an impressive youth career, capped by her performances in the Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup earlier this year, where she finished as one of the leading wicket-takers and became the first Indian to take a hat-trick in the tournament.
In her debut appearance, India’s young spinner bowled with controlled accuracy, conceding 16 runs in her allotted four overs while keeping Sri Lanka’s batters in check. Although she did not claim a wicket in the match, her disciplined lines and variations offered promise for the future. (Source- The Indian express)
The series opener also marked India’s first T20 International since their historic ODI World Cup triumph in November, and the side has used this series to integrate emerging talent with established performers as part of the broader preparation for next year’s global event.
India’s batting and bowling units, blending experience and youth, will look to continue building momentum in the second T20I scheduled for December 23 in Visakhapatnam.
