Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has admitted it is a “horrible feeling” not knowing what kind of performance his team will deliver, following a damaging defeat to Sunderland.
Derby Defeat Raises Fresh Questions
Newcastle suffered a 1-0 loss to their arch-rivals at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, producing a subdued display after setting up to be compact rather than assertive. The result came just weeks after a morale-boosting win over Manchester City and a four-match unbeaten run, which Howe believed signalled a turnaround.
The defeat has left Newcastle 12th in the Premier League, with only one away league win since mid-April.
Howe Questions Team Mentality
Speaking ahead of the Carabao Cup quarter-final, Howe said inconsistency has been the biggest concern this season.
“It’s a horrible feeling because when you enter a game you want players to give absolutely everything they have,” Howe said.
“There have been a few times this season where I’ve left games unsure about that, and that’s mentality. You’re representing yourself and your family every time you step on the pitch.”
Howe added that the team had “lost a bit of glue” and must rediscover their competitive edge.
Quick Response Needed Before Cup Clash
Newcastle now face holders Fulham at St James’ Park on Wednesday, with Howe stressing the importance of preparation over post-match talk.
Captain Bruno Guimarães described the derby performance as a “mess”, though Howe felt the side was organised but lacked execution.
Injury Blow for Newcastle
The Magpies will be without defender Dan Burn for four to six weeks after he fractured a rib and punctured a lung during the derby.
