Indian Chess Team Stranded Without Rooms Ahead of Chess Olympiad 2026

The Indian Chess Team Stranded situation has created an unexpected setback for India’s defending champions ahead of the 2026 FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The Indian contingent arrived in the city on September 15 but faced an accommodation crisis, with several members reportedly waiting for hotel rooms for hours.

The Chess Olympiad’s opening ceremony is scheduled for September 15, with the first round beginning on September 16. The tournament runs until September 27 in Samarkand.

Indian Chess Team Stranded After Arrival in Samarkand

India’s teams were expected to stay at the Silk Road by Minyoun hotel in Samarkand. However, after landing at the airport, members of the contingent were left waiting for their rooms to be allocated.

Srinath Narayanan, the non-playing captain of India’s men’s team, highlighted the situation on social media, saying the team had been at the airport for around five hours without clear information about when accommodation would be provided.

Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi also expressed his disappointment, describing the initial experience in Samarkand as poor.

Indian Chess Team Stranded With Defending Champions Ready

The accommodation issue comes just before India begins its title defence.

India created history at the 2024 Budapest Chess Olympiad by winning gold in both the Open and Women’s sections. The men’s team includes D Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa, Nihal Sarin and Vidit Gujrathi, with Srinath Narayanan serving as captain.

The women’s team features Koneru Humpy, R Vaishali, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agrawal and Savitha Shri, with Swayams Mishra as captain.

The 2026 Chess Olympiad is one of the biggest editions in the event’s history, with 208 teams in the Open section and 192 in the Women’s section confirmed.

For India, the immediate priority is to move beyond the accommodation problems and prepare for the opening round.

With Gukesh and several of India’s leading grandmasters in the squad, expectations are high. The defending champions will now look to put the disruption behind them and begin their title defence strongly.
