Kajal 76kg Selection Trial Win Sets Up Final Against Priya Malik
Indian wrestler Kajal won the 76kg category at the first stage of the Wrestling Federation of India’s selection trials in New Delhi on September 14, earning the right to challenge Asian Games-bound Priya Malik for a place in India’s team for the 2026 Senior World Championships.
The final selection bout will be held at a later date. The winner will earn the 76kg spot for the Senior World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, scheduled from October 24 to November 1.
Kajal 76kg Selection Trial Adds Another Milestone
Kajal’s victory comes shortly after another major achievement in her young career.
She recently completed a hat-trick of age-group World Championships gold medals. She won the U17 World Championships in 2024 at 69kg, followed by the U20 title at 72kg in 2025. Last month, she added the U20 World Championships 76kg gold, completing the three-title run across different age groups and weight categories.
She has also been competing at senior international events, making her emergence in the 76kg category particularly noteworthy.
Kajal 76kg Selection Trial Sets Up Priya Malik Challenge
The WFI’s selection process for the Senior World Championships features two stages in the Olympic weight categories.
The winners of the first-stage trials earned the opportunity to challenge wrestlers already selected for the 2026 Asian Games. Kajal’s win therefore gives her a direct opportunity to face Priya Malik for the final World Championships berth at 76kg.
Priya is part of India’s Asian Games-bound wrestling contingent for the Aichi-Nagoya Games, which begin on September 19.
Kajal 76kg Selection Trial Could Decide World Championships Spot
The upcoming bout between Kajal and Priya will be important for both wrestlers.
For Kajal, it is an opportunity to translate her outstanding age-group record and growing senior experience into a place at the Senior World Championships. For Priya, the final trial will be a chance to retain the position she earned as India’s Asian Games representative.
The final trial date has not yet been announced.
For now, Kajal’s latest victory has ensured that the 76kg category will have a major contest before India’s Senior World Championships team is finalised.
