Face-Off in Miami
Anthony Joshua, the former two-time unified heavyweight champion, met Jake Paul for the first time ahead of their December 19 fight at Miami’s Kaseya Center. The Briton, 35, warned he would “break his face and break his body up,” vowing to prove he is the superior fighter.
Respect Amidst the Trash Talk
Despite Joshua’s fierce words, the press conference remained cordial. Paul, 28, took shots at other fighters, including Francis Ngannou, Tommy Fury, and Ryan Garcia, while predicting a knockout win in rounds four or five. Joshua, meanwhile, declined to underestimate Paul’s skills, calling him “a serious fighter.”
A Fight Defined by Size and Experience
The stark size difference between Joshua and Paul highlighted the unusual nature of the matchup. Joshua, tipping the scales at over 17st 12lb (113kg) in recent bouts, must now come in under 17st 7lb (111kg) for the fight. Both fighters will wear regulation 10oz gloves, a stipulation reflecting safety concerns.
Joshua Realigns and Prepares
After a year out of the ring following his September 2024 loss to Daniel Dubois, Joshua has realigned his team and is training under Oleksandr Usyk’s coaching staff instead of Ben Davison. “I took 12 months out of the game and realigned my vision board,” he said. “It has taken a bit of time but now I’m here.”
High Stakes and High Paydays
The December bout is set to earn Joshua approximately £36.9m ($50m), underlining the commercial stakes. Paul, known for his social media-driven boxing career, remains one of the sport’s most lucrative attractions despite his relative inexperience at the elite level.
Looking Ahead
Both fighters are set to make headlines with their clash, as fans and pundits debate whether skill or spectacle will dominate. Paul has already suggested the fight could derail a future Joshua–Fury matchup, keeping the heavyweight division buzzing through the end of the year.
