India’s campaign at the U-19 and U-23 Asian Boxing Championships got off to a dream start in Jakarta, with a string of commanding victories led by Futures Cup gold medallist Chandrika Pujari and rising star Chirom Joyshree Devi.
Competing in the girls’ U-19 category, Chandrika showcased her class in the 51kg division with a convincing opening-round win, while Joyshree impressed in the 54kg class to give India early momentum in the continental event. Both boxers entered the championships on the back of strong performances at the World Boxing Futures Cup earlier this year and lived up to expectations.
India’s young boxers continued their fine run with several teammates also progressing to the next round after dominant displays across different weight categories. The strong opening-day results underlined the country’s growing depth in age-group boxing and reflected the quality of preparation undertaken at the national training camp ahead of the championships.
The Boxing Federation of India has fielded a balanced squad across both U-19 and U-23 divisions, blending reigning Asian champions with promising Futures Cup medallists. The tournament is regarded as a crucial stepping stone for young boxers aiming to break into the senior national team in the coming years.
With several Indian pugilists advancing on the opening day, the team will look to maintain its winning momentum as the competition intensifies in Jakarta, where Asia’s best young boxing talents are battling for continental honours.
