Abdullah Mason Retains WBO Lightweight Crown After Controversial Stoppage of Albert Bell

Abdullah Mason successfully defended his WBO lightweight world title, but not without controversy, as the unbeaten American stopped fellow Ohio native Albert Bell in the 12th and final round of an absorbing championship bout in Cleveland.

The victory preserved Mason’s unbeaten record and marked the first successful defence of his world title. However, the dramatic ending divided fans and pundits, with many questioning whether referee Mark Nelson halted the contest too early.

Bell Impresses in Surprise Opportunity

Bell stepped in as a late replacement after former world champion Joe Cordina withdrew from the bout. Despite the short notice, the experienced challenger produced an impressive display, frustrating the younger champion with slick movement, sharp counterpunching and disciplined defence.

For much of the opening half of the fight, Bell appeared to dictate the pace, repeatedly disrupting Mason’s rhythm and putting the champion under pressure in front of his home crowd.

Champion Turns the Tide

As the contest entered the championship rounds, Mason gradually began to shift the momentum. The 22-year-old increased his work rate, targeted Bell’s body and started landing cleaner power shots as signs of fatigue became evident on the challenger, who also appeared to be dealing with a damaged nose.

Mason’s relentless pressure finally paid off in the 12th round when he floored Bell twice. Although Bell managed to beat the count, referee Mark Nelson stepped in to wave off the contest, awarding Mason a technical knockout victory. The stoppage immediately became the talking point of the evening, with many believing Bell deserved the chance to continue despite being under heavy pressure.

Mason Praises Bell’s Effort

After the fight, Mason acknowledged Bell’s quality and resilience, crediting his opponent for making life difficult throughout the contest. The champion said patience proved crucial as he gradually broke Bell down before switching his attack upstairs to secure the decisive finish.

While Mason avoided calling out any specific opponents, he made it clear he is ready to face any challenger as he looks to build his reign at the top of the lightweight division.

Debate Overshadows Victory

Although Mason walked away with another successful title defence, the controversial ending is likely to dominate post-fight discussions. With Bell enjoying arguably the best performance of his career before the stoppage, calls for a rematch could gather momentum in the coming weeks.

For Mason, however, the result keeps his perfect record intact and reinforces his reputation as one of boxing’s brightest young champions, even if this latest victory came amid considerable debate.
