Lovlina Borgohain’s Silver Mission: Commonwealth Setback Fuels Asian Games Gold Dream

Olympic medallist completes a missing chapter of her career in Glasgow, but the 75kg boxer now wants to turn silver into gold at the Asian Games

Lovlina Borgohain’s Silver Mission: Commonwealth Setback Fuels Asian Games Gold Dream

Lovlina Borgohain has added another major medal to an already impressive international career, but the Indian boxing star has no intention of treating her Commonwealth Games silver as the finish line.

The Assam-born boxer secured her first Commonwealth Games medal in Glasgow, winning silver in the women’s 75kg category. The podium finish ended a notable gap in her career record, which already includes an Olympic bronze, World Championship medals, an Asian Championship gold and an Asian Games silver.

But the colour of the medal has left Borgohain hungry for more.

Her next major target is the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, where she will look to convert her Commonwealth silver into the gold medal that has remained just out of reach in some of the biggest tournaments of her career.

Glasgow Finally Brings the Missing Commonwealth Medal

Borgohain arrived in Glasgow carrying plenty of experience but without a Commonwealth Games medal.

Her previous Commonwealth campaigns had ended before the podium, making the 2026 edition an important opportunity for the veteran boxer. The five-boxer field in the women’s 75kg division gave her a direct route into the semifinals, where she was guaranteed at least a bronze.

Instead of simply celebrating the podium assurance, Borgohain pushed towards the final.

She defeated Tuvalu’s Tarona Taafaki 5-0 in the semifinal, booking her place in the gold-medal bout and ensuring that her first Commonwealth medal would be at least silver.

Commonwealth Games medal: First of her career

A Narrow Final That Changed the Conversation

The gold-medal contest against Australia’s Emma-Sue Greentree was a much closer affair.

Borgohain ultimately lost the final 1-4 on points, ending her Glasgow campaign with silver. It was a disappointing result for a boxer who had entered the tournament hoping to finish at the top, but the performance still represented a significant career achievement.

The silver also gives Borgohain something valuable ahead of the Asian Games: another high-level international final and another opportunity to examine what separated her from gold.

For an experienced fighter, that could prove more important than the medal itself.

From Olympic Bronze to Commonwealth Silver

Borgohain’s career has already taken her to some of the biggest stages in boxing.

Her most famous breakthrough came at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where she became the first Indian woman boxer from Assam to win an Olympic medal, securing bronze.

She later became a world champion in the 75kg division and won gold at the Asian Championships. At the 2023 Asian Games, she took silver after losing the final to China’s Li Qian.

That Asian Games silver remains particularly relevant now.

Borgohain has already experienced the feeling of finishing second at the continental event. With another silver now added at the Commonwealth Games, the motivation to finally stand on the top step has become even stronger.

The Asian Games Gold Target

The 2026 Asian Games will present a different level of challenge.

Asian women’s boxing features several strong nations and established international competitors. Borgohain will have to combine her experience, physical strength and tactical discipline to negotiate what is expected to be a highly competitive 75kg field.

She has already secured her place in India’s Asian Games squad after winning the national selection trial in Patiala. Borgohain defeated Sanamacha Chanu 5-0 in the 75kg final to book her place at both the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.

That makes the next assignment clear: Glasgow delivered the medal that was missing from her résumé; Japan represents the opportunity to improve its colour.

A Career Built on Medals — But Still Chasing Gold

Borgohain’s résumé tells the story of a boxer who has consistently competed at the highest level.

Lovlina Borgohain — Career Snapshot

Olympic Games: Bronze, Tokyo 2020

World Championships: Gold and additional podium finishes

Asian Championships: Gold

Asian Games: Silver, 2023

Commonwealth Games: Silver, 2026

Current category: Women’s 75kg

2026 Commonwealth semifinal: 5-0 win over Tarona Taafaki

2026 Commonwealth final: 1-4 loss to Emma-Sue Greentree

Her medal collection is impressive, but there is a recurring theme: the biggest prize has sometimes remained one step away.

The Asian Games now offer another chance to change that narrative.

Why the Commonwealth Silver Matters

The Glasgow medal should not be viewed simply as a silver medal that fell short of gold.

For Borgohain, it represents three important things.

First, it ends her Commonwealth Games medal drought. After previous campaigns failed to take her to the podium, she has finally added a Commonwealth medal to her résumé.

Second, it confirms her continued relevance at the highest level. At 28, Borgohain remains capable of reaching major finals despite the constant emergence of younger talent.

Third, it gives her another competitive reference point before the Asian Games. The 1-4 loss to Greentree provides areas for analysis, while the 5-0 semifinal victory demonstrates the level she can produce when she controls the contest.

From Silver to Gold

There is a certain symmetry to Borgohain’s journey.

The Tokyo Olympics brought bronze. The Asian Games brought silver. Glasgow has now produced another silver.

The next step is obvious.

Gold.

Borgohain has already qualified for the 2026 Asian Games, and her Commonwealth campaign has provided both confidence and unfinished business. The challenge in Japan will be tougher, but so will the stakes.

For one of India’s most accomplished women boxers, the Commonwealth silver may ultimately be remembered not as the medal she missed gold with, but as the medal that reignited the chase for it.

Main Takeaway

Lovlina Borgohain’s Glasgow campaign delivered her first Commonwealth Games medal, but the 1-4 defeat to Emma-Sue Greentree in the final ensured that her hunt for gold continues. With the 2026 Asian Games ahead, the Olympic bronze medallist now has another opportunity to turn years of elite experience into a continental title.
