“India’s Raghu Prasad Shines Bright as FIH Umpire of the Year 2025”

As the whistle blows and the crowd roars, few can match the sense of poise and precision that Raghu Prasad brings to the field. With a career spanning over two decades, the Indian umpire has become a cornerstone of international hockey officiating. Today, Prasad’s remarkable journey was celebrated as he was named the FIH Male Umpire of the Year 2025, a recognition that highlights not only his incredible professionalism but also his lasting impact on the sport.

India’s Raghu Prasad has been awarded the FIH Male Umpire of the Year 2025, a prestigious honor that recognizes his remarkable contributions to the world of hockey officiating. Prasad, with a career spanning over two decades, is celebrated for his professionalism, consistency, and leadership on the field.

Raghu Prasad’s umpiring career has been defined by both quality and longevity. With 198 international umpiring caps and 33 video umpire appointments, Prasad is set to make history at the 2025 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia, where he will become the **first-ever Asian umpire to reach 200 international caps.
Since his debut in 2003, Prasad has officiated at the highest levels, including four FIH Hockey World Cups, three Olympic Games, and countless other major tournaments, including the FIH Hockey Pro League, Commonwealth Games, and multiple Asian Games.

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has praised Prasad for his sharp decision-making, fitness, and resilience. “Raghu’s impact on international hockey officiating has been immense,” the FIH stated. “He has set the standard for professionalism, and his influence extends beyond his on-field performances to his leadership and mentorship of the next generation of officials.”
Known for his humility and commitment to integrity, Prasad’s career serves as a source of inspiration for aspiring umpires around the world.

Hockey India, too, joined in the celebrations, congratulating Raghu Prasad RV for this prestigious honor. The announcement was made by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) following the recommendations of the FIH Umpiring Committee, solidifying Prasad’s position as one of the top officials in the world.

The FIH Umpire of the Year Awards celebrate the highest standards in officiating. In 2025, Prasad’s award is a recognition of his long-term contributions to the sport, particularly in a non-Olympic year, where achievements are considered across broader timelines rather than just single-event performances.

Alongside Prasad, Irene Presenqui from Argentina was named FIH Female Umpire of the Year. Both officials embody the qualities that are essential to the integrity of hockey: fairness, dedication, and excellence.
As Prasad approaches his milestone of 200 international caps, his influence continues to shape the future of the sport. The recognition underscores the growing role of Asian officials in the international hockey community, with Prasad paving the way for future generations from the region.

In total, he has officiated 198 international matches, with a further 33 video umpire appointments. His ability to maintain peak physical fitness and decision-making skills over such a long career is a testament to his commitment to the game.

With his career milestone on the horizon, Prasad is poised to leave behind a legacy that will inspire not only players and coaches but also future generations of officials. As he approaches the end of his umpiring journey, the global hockey community remains deeply appreciative of his unwavering commitment to upholding the sport’s integrity.

The 2025 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia will mark a historic moment as Prasad becomes the first Asian umpire to reach 200 international umpiring caps—a significant achievement for both him and Asian hockey officiating as a whole.

Raghu Prasad’s recognition as FIH Male Umpire of the Year 2025 is a well-deserved tribute to his outstanding career. As one of the most respected figures in the global umpiring community, Prasad’s influence will undoubtedly continue to shape the future of hockey officiating for years to come.
