England Test captain Ben Stokes has played down suggestions of a rift with head coach Brendon McCullum, saying the pair remain closely aligned but may need to work together in a “slightly different way” moving forward.
The speculation emerged during England’s 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia, where Stokes and McCullum appeared to send contrasting messages about the team’s approach. While Stokes urged the team to dig in and adapt, McCullum suggested England had moved away from the aggressive style that previously brought them success.
However, Stokes insisted that any suggestion of a major disagreement has been exaggerated.
Stokes dismisses rift speculation
Speaking in his first interview since the Ashes review by the England and Wales Cricket Board, Stokes said his partnership with McCullum remains strong.
“I’m very confident in mine and Brendon’s ability to work together because we’ve done it for such a long period now,” Stokes said.
“But we might work together in a slightly different way. The main point is our alignment towards winning things and making this team as good as it can be.”
The England captain added that disagreements are natural in any professional partnership.
“We agree on about 95% of things. The other 5% we talk through until we reach the place we want to get to. Agreeing on every single thing is impossible,” he explained.
Stokes-McCullum era under scrutiny
Stokes and McCullum took charge of England’s Test team in 2022 and immediately transformed the side’s fortunes, winning 10 of their first 11 Tests with an aggressive style popularly dubbed “Bazball”.
Since then, results have been more mixed. England now have 16 wins and 17 losses under the leadership duo, including the recent Ashes defeat in Australia and a 2-2 home series draw against India.
England’s director of cricket Rob Key previously dismissed rumours of a fallout between the captain and coach, confirming both would remain in their roles following the Ashes review.
Focus shifts to future series
Both Stokes and McCullum remain contracted with England until 2027, with the captain’s deal running through the next Ashes and the coach’s contract extending until the following World Cup.
Stokes also revealed how much he values the partnership with McCullum.
“With what we’ve achieved together over the last four years, I couldn’t imagine doing this with anyone else,” he said.
Meanwhile, the England skipper is currently recovering from a broken cheekbone sustained while coaching academy players for Durham County Cricket Club earlier this year. He could return to action in the County Championship in May ahead of England’s Test series against New Zealand national cricket team in June.
