Bhubaneswar: In a dramatic start to the 2025 FIDE World Cup quarterfinals, Uzbek Grandmaster Nodirbek Yakubboev emerged as the sole victor on Day 1, defeating Germany’s Alexander Donchenko in a sharp battle.
Yakubboev’s Breakthrough Performance
Yakubboev outmaneuvered Donchenko by move 20, capitalizing on his opponent’s overextended pieces and mounting a relentless attack, according to reports. This win puts him on the verge of a semifinal berth, as just a draw in the second game would suffice to advance.
Crossing the 2700 Threshold
With this victory, Yakubboev’s live rating surged to 2701, officially placing him in the elite, though unofficial, 2700-club. His climb has been notable — he began the tournament with a rating around 2689.
Other Quarterfinals Kick Off Quietly
While Yakubboev made waves, the other three quarterfinal matches opened with calm:
Arjun Erigaisi vs Wei Yi ended in a balanced draw.
Javokhir Sindarov vs José Martínez also shared the point.
Sam Shankland vs Andrey Esipenko likewise drew their game.
Looking Ahead to Game 2
Game 2 of the quarterfinals is scheduled for Tuesday, November 18, where Donchenko will be under pressure to win, while Yakubboev can secure his spot in the semifinals with a solid draw.
