Ben Stokes’ return to action gathered momentum as the England captain picked up four wickets on the opening day of the Ashes warm-up match against England Lions in Perth.
Playing his first game since July due to a shoulder injury, Stokes impressed with figures of 4-45, helping restrict the Lions to 208-5 by tea at Lilac Hill.
Afternoon spell brings more success
Just as in the morning, both of Stokes’ afternoon wickets came from pull shots. Jordan Cox top-scored for the Lions with 53 before being caught at long leg, while Rehan Ahmed fell the same way for 16.
Support from Tongue and Wood
Josh Tongue also made an early breakthrough after lunch, dismissing opener Ben McKinney for 67. Mark Wood, returning from a knee injury, bowled two sharp four-over spells, showing encouraging rhythm ahead of the first Test.
Jacks and Rew steady Lions
Will Jacks, who is part of the senior Ashes squad but turning out for the Lions in this fixture, looked composed and remained unbeaten on 28 at tea. Seventeen-year-old Thomas Rew, regarded as one of Somerset’s brightest talents, was not out on seven.
Eyes on Ashes opener
On a warm day in Perth, England opted to bowl first to maximise time in the field before the Ashes opener at Optus Stadium on 21 November. Jofra Archer also bowled a lively spell, testing Jacks with pace and bounce as England’s pace attack found valuable match practice.
