Oklahoma City Thunder guard Nikola Topic has been diagnosed with testicular cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy, the team confirmed Thursday through General Manager Sam Presti.
Earlier this month, Topic underwent a testicular procedure, with the team initially announcing he would be sidelined for at least four weeks. Now, Presti has revealed the underlying reason — and shared that doctors are “extremely positive” about Topic’s long-term outlook.
Despite his diagnosis, the 20-year-old Serbian guard has continued working out and training, determined to maintain his rhythm and spirit. Presti said Topic had asked to keep the matter private until after treatment had begun.
“He has all the tools that you could ask for somebody to take on and conquer the situation,” Presti said, expressing confidence in the rookie’s resilience.
Topic’s journey has already been marked by adversity. The 2024 first-round pick missed his entire rookie season while recovering from an ACL tear, but returned to action this summer, impressing in NBA Summer League and the preseason — including a standout 10-point, 7-assist performance against Charlotte.
His diagnosis comes as a blow to the defending NBA champions, who had high hopes for Topic’s integration into their largely unchanged roster. Still, the Thunder community has rallied behind him, with messages of support and solidarity pouring in from teammates and fans alike.
Insight:
Topic’s determination through back-to-back personal challenges underscores the mental fortitude required at the highest level of sport. His story is now about more than basketball — it’s a testament to perseverance, positivity, and the human spirit amid adversity.
