Nick Kyrgios’ chances of featuring at the 2026 Australian Open have received a major lift after he was confirmed as a marquee participant in the 1 Point Slam, returning to the iconic Rod Laver Arena for the first time since early 2025.
The exhibition-style event will feature 48 players — a mix of top pros, rising amateurs and celebrity wildcards — including world No.1 Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, competing in a one-day shootout with a winner-takes-all £498k (AUD $1m) prize. Each match is decided by just one point, with serve determined by a game of rock-paper-scissors.
Major Boost for Kyrgios’ Australian Open Hopes
The former Wimbledon finalist, now ranked No. 668 after an injury-ravaged three years, has played only five matches in 2025. His long-standing injury-protected ranking of No. 21 has expired, meaning he will need a wildcard to enter his home Grand Slam.
Kyrgios, 30, has been out since March due to knee and wrist injuries but is steadily working towards full fitness. His confirmed participation in the 1 Point Slam — alongside other warm-up events — signals strong intent to mount a serious comeback.
Dubai Showdown with Sabalenka to Follow
Kyrgios is also preparing for a high-profile ‘Battle of the Sexes’ exhibition against world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka on December 28 in Dubai. The Australian admitted he feels the weight of expectation heading into the match.
“A lot of male players were like, ‘you’re representing all of us,’” Kyrgios said.
“I’m no stranger to taking heat from the media, but I’m excited. I’ll show the world that as good as she is, she has weaknesses too.”
He will follow that with an appearance at the Kooyong Classic, further fuelling speculation that a full-scale competitive return is imminent.
With a star-studded cast, a unique format and Kyrgios back under the Melbourne spotlight, the 1 Point Slam promises to be one of the most-watched curtain-raisers to the 2026 tennis season.
