Mauricio Pochettino may be leading the United States toward the 2026 World Cup, but part of him still misses the Premier League. The Argentine coach admits England’s top flight continues to hold a special place in his heart.

“The Premier League is the best league in the world,” Pochettino said. “Of course, I’m missing it. I’m happy in America, but I’d love to come back someday. It’s the most competitive league.”

Unfinished Business in England

The 53-year-old has managed three Premier League clubs — Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, and Chelsea. His most memorable spell came with Spurs, where he built a thrilling side that reached the 2019 Champions League final and finished second in the league two years earlier.

Yet, the lack of silverware still bothers him. “We were so close at Tottenham. We nearly touched it — winning the Premier League or Champions League,” he said, recalling his five-year stint in north London.

Pochettino also spoke warmly about his former chairman, Daniel Levy, who left Spurs after 24 years. “I was very surprised by his departure,” he said. “His legacy is amazing. He gave me the chance to manage one of the best clubs in the world.”

New Chapter in the USA

Now in charge of the U.S. men’s national team, Pochettino faces a completely different challenge — preparing a young squad for a home World Cup. His early results have been mixed, with 11 wins in 20 matches and a few tough defeats against Mexico, Canada, and South Korea.

Adapting to the rhythm of international football hasn’t been easy either. “The intensity is different. You only get a few days to prepare, play, and then the players go back to their clubs,” he explained. “After that, you feel empty because you can’t keep working with them.”

Changing the Soccer Culture

Beyond tactics, Pochettino’s biggest test lies in reshaping the football culture in the U.S. He’s been vocal about the need to instill a stronger competitive mindset.

“I know the culture of football,” he said. “We need to bring that culture to the American player. After one year, we are making good progress. The language of football is universal. It doesn’t matter if you’re American, Brazilian, or English — if you want to win, you must compete.”

The arrival of global stars like Lionel Messi has also helped boost interest in soccer. “Players like Messi inspire kids,” Pochettino said. “Now, they don’t just want to play basketball or baseball — they want to play soccer too.”

Looking Ahead

With the World Cup less than two years away, Pochettino’s task is clear — build a competitive U.S. team that can make history on home soil. But his heart still beats for the Premier League.

“I’m so happy here,” he smiled, “but one day, I’d love to return to England.”
