Lionel Messi has been the standout player in Major League Soccer, claiming the Golden Boot with 29 goals and on course for another MVP award. However, without winning the MLS Cup, this season could still be seen as a failure for him and Inter Miami.
Golden Boot not enough for legacy
Messi has already rewritten MLS records with his scoring and assists, nearly surpassing Carlos Vela’s single-season combined goals and assists record. Yet, the league’s post-season play-offs are considered the main silverware, making the MLS Cup the ultimate prize.
Building a super team in Miami
Since Messi joined in 2023, Inter Miami has attracted stars like Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba. Off the pitch, the club has seen record merchandise sales and media attention, positioning Messi as a future co-owner. On the field, the club has yet to win the MLS Cup under his tenure, with only the 2023 Leagues Cup and 2024 Supporters’ Shield as trophies.
Play-offs define success
Inter Miami faces Nashville SC in the first round of the play-offs. Analysts argue that Messi’s legacy in MLS will hinge on finally delivering the Cup, with Bradley Wright-Phillips noting, “You can’t assemble The Avengers and not win the MLS Cup,” and Dax McCarty emphasizing the impact on Messi’s MLS legacy.
