England pacer Mark Wood is optimistic about regaining full fitness ahead of the Ashes opener in Australia next month.
Recovering from knee surgery
Wood, 35, has not played since England’s Champions Trophy loss to Afghanistan in February. He underwent surgery on his left knee in March after a frustrating run with injuries. His comeback during the tour of India was also cut short following an elbow issue that had sidelined him since August 2024.
Back in rhythm
Speaking on the Wisden Cricket Weekly podcast, Wood said he’s starting to find his rhythm again. “It was a frustrating summer. I didn’t get to play any cricket. Every time I felt ready, the knee just wasn’t quite there,” he said. “In the camp it’s been going well — I’ve had the speed gun out and the pace is getting back up.”
Eyes on the Ashes opener
The first Ashes Test begins on 21 November in Perth, where England will look to win their first series in Australia since 2010-11. “Hopefully I’m in form and bowling well in the practice games,” Wood said. “Rehab hasn’t been a straight curve — there have been ups and downs — but I’m in a good position now and quietly confident.”
Australia face injury worries
While Wood edges closer to a return, Australia are battling their own injury setbacks. All-rounder Cameron Green has been ruled out of the ODI series against India due to side soreness, with Marnus Labuschagne named as his replacement.
Captain Pat Cummins also remains a concern as he continues to recover from a back injury. Cricket Australia said Green is expected to return for the third round of the Sheffield Shield, starting 28 October, as part of his preparation for the Ashes.
