Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov Becomes Youngest Ever Chess World Cup Champion

Uzbekistan’s 19-year-old chess sensation Javokhir Sindarov created history on Wednesday by becoming the youngest player to win the Chess World Cup, defeating China’s Wei Yi in a tense rapid tiebreak final in Goa.

Entering the tournament as the 16th seed, Sindarov faced a challenging path to the title, including a dramatic semifinal victory over compatriot Nodirbek Yakubboev, decided only through tiebreaks. His win in the second 15’ + 10” rapid game sealed the championship match after the classical games ended in draws.

Both Sindarov and Wei sealed their spots in the 2026 Candidates Tournament by reaching the final. Sindarov’s triumph adds to a remarkable run for teenage stars in global chess, following world championship victories by D. Gukesh and Divya Deshmukh earlier this year.

Sindarov defended accurately in the opening classical game where Wei Yi used the Petrov Defense to press for advantage. After an intense 50-move draw, the rapid deciders saw Sindarov outplay Wei with exemplary composure and precision.

The champion earned $120,000 from the event’s $2 million prize fund.

The 11th FIDE World Cup, featuring 206 participants since its start on October 28, concluded with Sindarov’s historic victory, while Wei Yi reached the final after defeating Andrey Esipenko in his semifinal.
