Bihar : Muzaffarpur’s own Marium Fatima has carved her name in Bihar’s sporting history as the first Woman FIDE Master (WFM) from the state, achieving this prestigious international chess title at just 19 years old. Awarded by FIDE, this title symbolizes her outstanding skill and remarkable performances, including at the Commonwealth Chess Championship, where she surpassed the rating benchmark of 2000.
Starting her chess journey inspired by friends in school and supported wholeheartedly by her father—a chess enthusiast himself—Marium’s talent blossomed quickly. Early coaching sessions in Patna, rigorous practice during the COVID lockdown, and the mentorship of reputed coaches like Minhazul Hoda and Kumar Gaurav fueled her rapid rise. She has won numerous state championships across age categories and defeated many rated opponents, showcasing her consistent prowess.
Her success not only spotlights Marium as an emerging star of Indian chess but also reflects Bihar’s growing chess culture and the potential of women athletes in the state. The Bihar State Sports Authority has formally congratulated her, signaling institutional encouragement for more such breakthroughs.
