Sanath Jayasuriya Steps In As Father Figure To Dunith Wellalage After Tragic Loss

Young Cricketer Loses Father During Asia Cup

Sri Lankan all-rounder Dunith Wellalage was struck by tragedy during the Asia Cup when his father, Suranga Wellalage, passed away from a sudden heart attack. The 22-year-old, who was playing in the high-pressure clash against Afghanistan, was informed of the devastating news only after Sri Lanka sealed a six-wicket win.

Jayasuriya Extends Heartfelt Support

Head coach Sanath Jayasuriya personally broke the news to Wellalage after the match and later offered an emotional message of support. Praising Suranga Wellalage for raising a son with values, discipline, and a deep love for cricket, Jayasuriya vowed to stand by Dunith like a father, assuring him of guidance and care during this difficult period.

Cricket Fraternity Pays Tribute

Messages of condolence poured in from across the cricketing world. Sri Lankan legends, fellow teammates, and international stars such as Lasith Malinga and Mohammad Nabi shared their sympathies, hailing Wellalage’s courage to perform on the field while unaware of the tragedy at home.

Focus Turns To Family And Healing

Wellalage, who had contributed significantly in the Afghanistan clash with both bat and ball, has returned to Colombo to be with his family. His immediate participation in the remainder of the Asia Cup remains uncertain, as Sri Lanka Cricket has assured full support for his personal needs.

More Than Just Cricket

The episode underlined the close-knit bonds in Sri Lankan cricket, with Jayasuriya’s gesture reminding the sporting world that the spirit of the game goes beyond runs and wickets—it is about family, unity, and compassion.
