Zagreb : Paris Olympics bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat faced a major setback at the 2025 World Wrestling Championships after missing the weigh-in for the men’s freestyle 57kg category by 1.7 kilograms, forcing him to forfeit his bout. The young wrestler, who had created history by becoming India’s youngest individual Olympic medallist at just 21 during the Paris 2024 Games, was reportedly struck by illness just before the official weigh-in. His coach Lalit Prasad revealed that Aman fell ill with a fever the night before, which hampered his ability to cut weight and appear for the bout against North Macedonia’s Vladimir Erogov.
Aman’s journey in wrestling has been nothing short of inspiring. Born in 2003 in Haryana, he overcame early personal tragedies, losing both parents by age 11, and found solace and purpose in wrestling, inspired by Olympic great Sushil Kumar. Training at Delhi’s famed Chhatrasal Stadium, Aman rose quickly through the ranks, securing gold medals at the Asian Wrestling Championships and U23 World Championships, before clinching a historic Olympic bronze in Paris with a commanding 13-5 win over Puerto Rico’s Darian Cruz. His Olympic stint saw dominant performances including technical superiority victories and outclassing some of the sport’s best.
The disqualification at the World Championships is a bitter blow for both Aman and the Indian wrestling team, especially given his status as a rising star and a strong medal hope. Coach Lalit expressed hope that Aman would recover soon and come back stronger as the team continues to pursue excellence on the global stage.
With this unfortunate incident behind him, Aman Sehrawat’s legacy as a trailblazer for young Indian wrestlers remains intact — a resilient competitor who turned personal loss into sporting greatness and brought pride to the nation on the world’s biggest stage. His fans and the Indian wrestling fraternity hope to see him back in action soon, fighting for more glory for the country.
