India Beats Oman on Penalties, Clinches Historic Third Place in CAFA Nations Cup 2025

Bhubaneswar : In a thrilling third-place playoff at the CAFA Nations Cup 2025, India edged out Oman 3-2 in a tense penalty shootout after the match ended 1-1 in normal time. Under the new leadership of coach Khalid Jamil, India showed grit and resilience against higher-ranked Oman in Hisor, Tajikistan, marking their first-ever victory over Oman in international football. The Indian team’s veteran goalkeeper and captain, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, emerged as the hero with crucial saves, including the final penalty that sealed the win.

The match saw Oman taking an early lead through a goal by Al Yahmadi in the 56th minute, but India’s persistence paid off when Udanta Singh leveled the score in the 81st minute with a powerful header from a Rahul Bheke assist. Despite the intense pressure throughout extra time, neither side could find the winner, leading to the high-stakes penalties.

India opened the shootout with confidence as Lallianzuala Chhangte and Rahul Bheke converted their penalties while Oman faltered with missed attempts. Anwar Ali’s penalty was saved, adding to the drama before Gurpreet Singh Sandhu’s final heroic save secured the 3-2 shootout victory. Reflecting on the historic win, coach Khalid Jamil expressed, “This is a great boost for Indian football, showing our potential and fighting spirit.”

This victory not only brought India a well-earned podium finish but also injected fresh optimism for the team’s future endeavors on the international stage. With a blend of tactical discipline and spirited play, the Blue Tigers have set a promising foundation to build on.

Players mentioned: Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, Udanta Singh, Rahul Bheke, Anwar Ali, Lallianzuala Chhangte, Al Yahmadi.

Final Score: India 1 (3) – Oman 1 (2) (Penalty shootout)
