SYDNEY, Australia — Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc has announced his retirement from T20 internationals, a move aimed at prolonging his career in the longer formats of the game. The 35-year-old left-armer will now focus on Australia’s extensive Test schedule and the 2027 ODI World Cup.
In a T20 international career that spanned 65 matches from his 2012 debut, Starc became Australia’s second-highest wicket-taker in the format with 79 scalps. He was also a vital member of the squad that won the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE.
A Difficult Decision With a Clear Focus
Starc’s decision comes just six months before the next T20 World Cup, but he insists his priority lies with Test cricket. “Test cricket is and has always been my highest priority,” Starc said in his interview to Fox Cricket. “I have loved every minute of every T20 game I have played for Australia, particularly the 2021 World Cup… Looking ahead to an away Indian Test tour, the Ashes, and an ODI World Cup in 2027, I feel this is my best way forward to remain fresh, fit and at my best for those campaigns.” His retirement also provides the bowling group with time to prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup without him.
The Search for a Replacement
Cricket Australia’s chairman of selectors George Bailey acknowledged the difficulty of replacing a player of Starc’s caliber. “I’m not sure we’re going to find someone swinging the new ball at 145 kilometers per hour,” Bailey said. “So it might not necessarily be a like-for-like replacement” Bailey highlighted to Fox Sports.
Bailey highlighted several young pacers who could step up, including Nathan Ellis, Ben Dwarshuis, and Sean Abbott. Starc’s retirement and the injury to captain Pat Cummins, who will miss the upcoming T20 series against New Zealand, opens the door for these bowlers to secure their spot in the team
Squad Changes and Team Dynamics
Starc’s announcement came as Australia named their squad for the three-match T20 series against New Zealand. Notable changes include Cameron Green being rested to focus on his Test preparations, and Nathan Ellis missing the series for the birth of his first child. In their place, Marcus Stoinis, who was previously not selected for recent series, returns to the squad along with Matt Short and Mitchell Owen.
