Pakistan brought an end to South Africa’s remarkable 10-Test winning streak with a hard-fought 93-run victory in the opening Test in Lahore.
Pakistan break Proteas’ streak
Chasing 277 for victory, the world champions were dismissed for 183 on the fourth day. South Africa’s last defeat in Test cricket came more than a year ago, their unbeaten run capped by a World Test Championship final triumph over Australia in June.
Shaheen and Noman lead Pakistan’s charge
Left-arm quick Shaheen Afridi, who went wicketless in the first innings, made a strong comeback by taking 4-33, including the key wicket of first-innings centurion Tony de Zorzi with just the third ball of the day. Spinner Noman Ali also starred, finishing with 4-79 to complete match figures of 10-191.
Off-spinner Sajid Khan joined the act by dismissing opener Ryan Rickelton, who batted patiently for 45 from 145 balls. Dewald Brevis provided brief resistance with a fluent 54 before Noman bowled him, while Shaheen returned to clean up the tail using sharp reverse swing.
Imam and Agha set the platform
Pakistan’s victory was built on vital first-innings contributions from Imam-ul-Haq and Salman Agha, both scoring 93 to help the hosts post 378. South Africa’s Senuran Muthusamy was their standout bowler with match figures of 11-174, but lacked consistent support.
Strong start to WTC campaign
This win puts Pakistan second in the new World Test Championship cycle, just behind Australia. It also continues their excellent form at home, following their series victory over England last year.
The second and final Test begins in Lahore on 20 October.
