In a major boost for Team India, T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has cleared his fitness test at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, making him available for the Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to begin on September 9 in the UAE.
Return after surgery
The flamboyant batter had undergone surgery for a sports hernia in his lower-right abdomen in Munich, Germany, this June. He spent the past few weeks undergoing rehabilitation at the CoE, before being declared fit to resume international cricket.
“Fitness tests are mandatory before Return to Play (RTP) post-surgery. Surya has cleared the test and will be available to lead the Indian team during the Asia Cup,” a senior BCCI official confirmed.
India’s group fixtures
India has been drawn in Group A alongside Pakistan, hosts UAE and Oman. The Men in Blue will kick off their campaign against the UAE on September 9, followed by a high-profile clash against Pakistan on September 14 in Dubai, before concluding the group stage against Oman on September 19.
If India and Pakistan both qualify as group leaders, they will meet again in the Super Four stage on September 21, with the tantalising possibility of a third showdown in the final on September 28.
A key boost ahead of T20 World Cup
Suryakumar, popularly known as SKY, was adjudged Player of the Series in IPL 2025 and is expected to play a crucial role in India’s build-up to next year’s T20 World Cup. His fitness clearance ahead of the Asia Cup selection meeting in Mumbai next week ensures India will have its full-time leader back in action for the continental tournament.
