Mumbai : India’s star opener Rohit Sharma is back in full training mode as he gears up for a much-anticipated return to the One Day International arena. The 38-year-old was recently spotted at a Mumbai training facility, working closely with former India cricketer and coach Abhishek Nayar. His immediate goal: to be at peak match fitness for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia in October.
Sharma, who took a step back from Test and T20I cricket earlier this year, is now channeling all his efforts into the 50-over format. Sources close to the player indicate that this is part of a calculated plan to extend his ODI career, potentially through to the 2027 World Cup.
Currently ranked No. 2 in the ICC ODI batting rankings with 756 points—just behind teammate Shubman Gill—Sharma’s statistics remain among the best in the game. His presence at the top of the order continues to be viewed as a vital asset for India’s limited-overs success.
Despite ongoing speculation about the futures of both Sharma and fellow veteran Virat Kohli, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has assured that no immediate retirement decisions are being considered. The board has emphasised that performances on the field will guide selection and career timelines, rather than age alone.
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has thrown his support behind the duo, insisting that players of their calibre should continue representing the country for as long as they can deliver match-winning performances.
Far from planning an exit, Sharma’s recent schedule—featuring intense net sessions, strength conditioning, and tactical preparation—signals a determined push to return in top form. The October series in Australia is expected to be the first step in what could be a defining late-career chapter for one of India’s most decorated batters.
