Srinagar is gearing up to host the inaugural Khelo India Water Sports Festival (KIWSF) 2025 from August 21 to 23, with Dal Lake as the stunning backdrop. The event promises to combine competitive water sports with a grand celebration of Kashmir’s tourism, art, handicrafts, and cultural heritage.
Chief Secretary calls for a showcase of Kashmir’s charm
Chairing a high-level review meeting on Tuesday, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo described the festival as a rare opportunity to present the Valley’s diverse attractions on a national platform. He directed the Handicrafts & Handloom Department to curate world-class exhibitions for visiting athletes, officials, and spectators.
The Chief Secretary stressed that the festival’s timing — coinciding with Srinagar’s peak tourist season — was perfect for creating a lasting impression that could see the city become a regular stop on the Khelo India calendar. He urged the Youth Services & Sports Department to ensure flawless execution so the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports might consider Srinagar for future editions.
Departments on high alert for smooth delivery
Preparations include readiness checks on the venue, sports infrastructure, athlete accommodation, security, branding, and publicity. All key departments — from Tourism and Power Development to Jal Shakti, Civil Aviation, LCMA, SDRF, Health, and Fire & Emergency Services — have been tasked to deliver their roles with maximum efficiency.
800 athletes from across India to compete
Commissioner Secretary, Youth Services & Sports, Sarmad Hafeez, revealed that about 800 athletes and officials from 28 States and Union Territories will compete in five water sports disciplines over three days. The main competitions will feature Kayaking, Canoeing, and Rowing, while demonstration events will include Dragon Boat Racing, Water Skiing, and a special Shikara Race.
Sarmad Hafeez also reaffirmed the department’s ambition to brand Srinagar as the “Sports Capital of India”, drawing on the successful experience of hosting five editions of the Khelo India Winter Games.
Festival mascot unveiled
On Thursday, organisers unveiled the official mascot for the festival — the Himalayan Kingfisher — chosen for its vibrant colours and symbolism. With bold orange and blue hues, the bird embodies energy, tranquillity, adventure, and the beauty of Kashmir. Its image will be featured alongside the event logo, which depicts a Shikara against the backdrop of mountains, reflecting the blend of nature, sport, and Kashmiri heritage.
Cultural extravaganza alongside the competition
Secretary of the Sports Council, Nuzhat Gul, announced that coordination committees have been set up for all operational areas, with each team assigned a dedicated State Liaison Officer for smooth facilitation.
The opening ceremony will be a major draw, featuring a drone light show, traditional folk dances, celebrity performances, and stalls showcasing local street food, art, culture, and products from Self-Help Groups.
Organised by the J&K Sports Council in partnership with the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and the Sports Authority of India, KIWSF 2025 is poised to be a landmark event that blends sporting action with the natural and cultural splendour of Kashmir.
