Cape Town will host the 2027 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships from October 6–10, marking the first time the event will take place in Africa. The successful bid was submitted by Golazo South Africa in partnership with Athletics South Africa and Western Province Athletics, with the city’s Table Mountain set to provide a dramatic backdrop.
Scenic and Challenging Venue
Known for the Cape Town Marathon and the Two Oceans Marathon, the city offers diverse terrain, including steep ascents, rugged trails, and fast descents, along with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding mountains. Organisers aim to highlight Africa’s potential in off-road running and inspire future generations of athletes.
Global Event History
The World Mountain Running Championships began in 1985, while the World Trail Championships started in 2007. The events merged in 2021 into the biennial World Mountain and Trail Running Championships. Innsbruck and Stubai, Austria, hosted in 2023, while Canfranc-Pirineos, Spain, will stage the 2025 edition in late September.
Big Line-Up Expected
The 2027 championships will feature four senior races—classic (up and down), uphill, short trail, and long trail—alongside an U20 race. About 1,200 elite runners from over 80 nations are expected, plus more than 2,000 participants in mass events.
Leaders Welcome Cape Town’s Bid
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe described the decision as “an exciting opportunity for the sport,” noting Cape Town will be the fifth African city to host a global athletics event in the past decade. Leaders of the World Mountain Running Association, International Association of Ultrarunners, and International Trail Running Association praised the city’s scenery and proven hosting capabilities.
Economic and Sporting Boost
Western Cape Cultural Affairs and Sport Minister Ricardo Mackenzie highlighted the event’s potential for economic growth and job creation. Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis warned athletes not to underestimate Table Mountain’s rugged trails despite its beauty. Golazo CEO Bob Verbeeck called the award a milestone for Cape Town and announced plans to open a local office before the championships.
