Fir Park, Motherwell – Motherwell produced one of the most memorable results of their recent history as they beat Celtic 2–0 at Fir Park on Tuesday night, denying the Hoops the chance to pull level with Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts.
After waiting 35 league games without a win over Celtic, the Steelmen finally broke the hoodoo in style with a dominant display that had fans buzzing until the final whistle.
The breakthrough came after 13 minutes when Ibrahim Said rose between defenders to power home from a precise Stephen O’Donnell delivery — his first goal in a Motherwell shirt.
Motherwell remained the more threatening side, and their pressure paid off again eight minutes into the second half. A comical defensive error by Celtic allowed Elliot Watt to sweep home from close range and double the lead, leaving the visitors stunned.
Celtic struggled to create clear chances throughout and finished the game without scoring — a rare blank for the champions this season. Despite a late spell of possession, they were unable to turn pressure into meaningful opportunities.
After the match, Celtic manager Wilfried Nancy admitted the performance fell short of what was required: “It was not a good performance… we struggled a bit defensively in the first half,” he told BBC Scotland, while insisting the team will improve with hard work.
On the other side, Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou hailed the victory as perhaps their best of the campaign, praising his players’ resilience and tactical discipline. “It’s an impressive win and a day our supporters will remember,” he said.
The result leaves Motherwell with two huge points and renewed belief, while Celtic’s title hopes face a fresh test as the hectic festive schedule continues.
