New Delhi, India – India’s ambition to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG) is set to receive a formal seal of approval from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) during its Special General Meeting (SGM) on Wednesday. With Canada having withdrawn from the race, India has emerged as a strong favorite to host the multi-sport event.
IOA Approval and Bid Deadline
The primary agenda for the SGM at the IOA headquarters is the “Approval to submit a bid to Commonwealth Sport (formerly CGF) for hosting the 2030 CWG in India, including any incidental actions therewith.” India has already submitted an Expression of Interest, designating Ahmedabad as the proposed host city. The country now faces a crucial August 31 deadline to submit the final bid proposals.
Inspection Visits and Host Selection
A team of officials from Commonwealth Sport, led by its Director of Games Darren Hall, is currently in Ahmedabad for a three-day visit, inspecting potential venues and meeting with Gujarat government officials. A larger delegation from Commonwealth Sport is expected to visit India later in August.
The final decision on the host country for the 2030 CWG will be made by the General Assembly of Commonwealth Sport in the last week of November in Glasgow. According to IOA executive committee member Lt. Gen. (retd) Harpal Singh, who is also on the Sports Committee of Commonwealth Sport, the host selection will prioritize “sustainability, athletic centre, flexibility in terms of regional appeal.” Singh expressed optimism, stating, “We are hopeful and optimistic that the 2030 Games will come to India.”
