Memphis, USA – England’s Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood have officially clinched their places on Team Europe for the upcoming Ryder Cup against the United States, set to take place from September 26-28 at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York. Their strong performances at the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Sunday secured their automatic qualification.
Automatic Qualifiers and Looming Decisions
Justin Rose, who sensationally won the $20 million tournament in Memphis in a playoff, and Tommy Fleetwood, despite a challenging finish that saw him end one shot off the pace, both amassed enough points to join Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy as the initial three automatic qualifiers for Captain Luke Donald’s European side. Rose will be making his seventh Ryder Cup appearance, while Fleetwood is set for his fourth consecutive outing. Europe will be defending the Cup, having won the previous edition in 2023 in Italy (16.5-11.5).
Team Europe captain Luke Donald is set to announce his full team after the British Masters concludes on August 24. The top six players in the Europe Team Rankings will automatically qualify, and Donald will then make six captain’s picks to complete the 12-man roster.
The Race for Remaining Automatic Spots
As of Monday, August 11, Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre, England’s Tyrrell Hatton, and Austria’s Sepp Straka hold the fourth through sixth automatic qualification spots. However, the race remains tight for these positions.
- Robert MacIntyre is confirmed to play in this week’s BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland, where he can earn crucial points.
- Sepp Straka, unfortunately, withdrew from the $20 million BMW Championship on Monday for family reasons, which could impact his standing.
- Tyrrell Hatton will be competing in the LIV Tour event in Indianapolis, where he cannot accrue Ryder Cup qualification points under the current system.
Ireland’s Shane Lowry, Denmark’s Rasmus Hojgaard, and Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg are all within striking distance of securing automatic spots. Notably, Lowry trails Straka for sixth place by a mere 21.16 points. If Lowry completes the BMW Championship this weekend, he is projected to earn enough points to move past both Hatton and Straka, as competitors at the BMW Championship receive 1.5 points for every $1,000 earned. The competition for the final automatic berths promises to be intense as the qualification period nears its conclusion.
