Suzuka: Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso will sit out the opening practice session of the Japanese Grand Prix, with rookie Jak Crawford set to drive for Aston Martin during Free Practice 1 at Suzuka Circuit.
Aston Martin confirmed that test and reserve driver Crawford will take the wheel of Alonso’s AMR26 in FP1, scheduled for the early-morning hours of March 27.
It will mark the 20-year-old American’s first FP1 appearance as the team’s official third driver this season, although he previously completed two practice outings toward the end of last year.
The change comes in line with Formula One regulations requiring teams to field rookie drivers in at least four practice sessions during the season. Crawford’s run will allow the team to gather data while giving the young driver valuable track experience.
“I’m really excited to get behind the wheel at Suzuka. It’s such a historic yet demanding circuit, and I can’t wait to apply what I’ve learned in the simulator,” Crawford said, thanking the team for the opportunity.
Aston Martin has endured a challenging start to the campaign, with reliability concerns linked to vibrations from the new power unit affecting battery performance and race distance. Alonso indicated the team is working closely with Honda to address the issue ahead of the Suzuka weekend.
Despite missing FP1, Alonso is expected to return for the remaining practice sessions, qualifying and the race as Aston Martin balances rookie development with efforts to improve competitiveness early in the season.
The Formula One Japanese Grand Prix will be held from March 27 to 29.
