Barcelona, Spain – Spanish champions Barcelona officially announced on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, that they have secured Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford on a season-long loan deal until June 30, 2026. The agreement also includes an option for the La Liga giants to purchase the English forward permanently.
Spanish reports indicate that Barcelona will cover approximately 75 percent of Rashford’s substantial £325,000-a-week wage during his loan spell, with the player reportedly foregoing the remainder.
Out of Favor at Old Trafford
The 27-year-old England international had found himself out of favor under Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim, who was appointed manager on November 11, 2024. Rashford’s challenging period at Old Trafford saw him spend the final months of the 2024/25 season on loan at fellow Premier League side Aston Villa. He made 17 appearances for Villa, scoring four goals, before a hamstring injury prematurely ended his season in April.
Reports suggest that Amorim had publicly expressed doubts about Rashford’s commitment and desire, leading to the Academy graduate, who made his United debut in 2015 and scored 138 goals in 426 appearances, becoming an outcast at the club. His last appearance for Manchester United was in December 2024.
Barcelona’s Reinforcement Drive
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick had publicly expressed his admiration for Rashford in May, alongside Liverpool winger Luis Diaz, amid swirling transfer rumors. The Catalan club, despite winning a domestic treble last season with an “irresistible” attack, sought to reinforce their left flank, an area where they lacked significant backup for key wingers Raphinha and Lamine Yamal.7 Rashford’s versatility also means he could provide cover for veteran Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, who turns 37 in August.
Barcelona’s initial primary target for the left wing was Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams, but the Spanish international ultimately signed a new deal with his Basque club, paving the way for Rashford’s move.
Financial Hurdles and British Precedent
Barcelona’s acquisition of Rashford comes with financial considerations. The club faced difficulties registering new signings with La Liga last season, including midfielder Dani Olmo. Reports suggest they may need to balance their books before officially registering Rashford and their first summer arrival, goalkeeper Joan Garcia.
Rashford’s move to Barcelona is somewhat rare for a British player in recent decades. Few have joined the Catalan club since the 1980s, a period when Gary Lineker, Steve Archibald, and Mark Hughes all featured for the club.
The transfer has already drawn comment, with former Manchester United great Teddy Sheringham criticizing Rashford’s attempt to make the switch, telling SkyBet: “From my perspective, if you go from Manchester United to Barcelona, that’s a step up that he hasn’t deserved.”
Meanwhile, Manchester United is reportedly looking to offload several other players this summer, including Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Alejandro Garnacho, as they undergo a period of significant squad restructuring.
