New Delhi, India– In a significant development for Indian shooting, the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) announced on Thursday its decision to award New Delhi the hosting rights for two prestigious events: the combined World Cup in 2027 and the Junior World Championships in 2028. This decision, made during the ISSF Executive Committee meeting, solidifies India’s growing prominence on the global shooting calendar.
New Delhi: A Hub for International Shooting
The Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range in New Delhi is set to become a regular fixture for elite international competitions. Beyond the newly awarded events, the city will also host the Junior World Cup (Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun) in September-October of this year. This consistent hosting schedule underscores India’s capability to organize world-class shooting events, following its successful staging of the season-ending elite World Cup Final in October last year and the ISSF World Cup in Pistol/Rifle and Shotgun in 2021.
The combined World Cup in 2027 will feature all three disciplines: rifle, pistol, and shotgun, with specific dates to be announced in due course.
NRAI Expresses Enthusiasm for Olympic Path
Kalikesh Singh Deo, President of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), expressed profound optimism about the decision. “With the Los Angeles Olympics as our target, hosting at least one international event every year leading up to it is a tremendous opportunity for our shooters,” he stated. He emphasized the dual benefit of these events, providing senior athletes with enhanced preparation and offering invaluable exposure to elite competition for juniors on home soil.
Sultan Singh, Secretary General of NRAI, further highlighted India’s rise as a key destination in the sport. “India is now a key stop on the global shooting calendar,” he said, extending gratitude to the Government, Sports Ministry, Sports Authority of India, and all stakeholders for their unwavering support.
Global Calendar Confirmed: World Championships in Daegu and Cairo
In addition to the New Delhi announcements, the ISSF also confirmed the host cities for the highly anticipated 2027 World Championships, which will serve as crucial qualification events for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics:
- Daegu, South Korea: Will host the World Championship in Rifle and Pistol in 2027. This marks Korea’s third time hosting the World Championships, following Seoul in 1978 and Changwon nine years ago. Daegu will also host the ISSF World Cup Final in 2027.
- Cairo, Egypt: Has been selected to host the 2027 World Championship for Shotgun. Cairo has a recent history of hosting ISSF events, having successfully organized World Cup events for rifle and pistol from 2022 to 2024.
The strategic placement of these events across the globe, with a strong focus on India, reflects the ISSF’s commitment to developing and promoting shooting sports worldwide, especially as the next Olympic cycle progresses towards Los Angeles 2028.
